I haven’t put a lot of miles on it yet because of the weather, but so far, I haven’t noticed much of a difference. Jumping to a 280-300mm will definitely effect handling.
For $1,000 - $1,500 I would make the jump because it completely changes the appearance of the bike. I know it's a lot of money these days. I just asked the kids to cut back a little and stretch a couple extra months out of those gym shoes and so on.
