Roof if you are used to working with PC iMac might be too big of a jump, you'll have to re-teach yourself some fundamentals, not to mention costs Apple will be more expensive, and software you use for your current PC may not work with the apple.

The notebooks are pretty damn good from apple, it's the learning curve you'll need to work on...

If you're going to stay with PC my suggestions in order: EDIT: Sorry these are laptops.... lol
1. ACER
2. HP
3. Toshiba
4. Dell

Desktops
1. BUILD YOUR OWN!! Cheaper
2. HP
3. Dell

These are my opinions... If you can wait some more then wait until Windows8 gets released they are doing some amazing things in this new OS I've been alpha testing (the Server OS) it since Aug.

Here is a killer desktop:
HP Compaq 6005 Pro (VS843UT#ABA) - Desktop Computers
Same system here:
HP (VS843UT#ABA) Product Page -- NextWarehouse.com

If you get it, go full out and get the full 16GB of RAM for ~$90:
8GB Kit (4GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 upgrades for HP - Compaq 6005 Pro Microtower Desktop/PC, CT1029789 from Crucial.com

The only thing you have to buy afterwards would be MS Office ... IF you felt that was necessary. Otherwise, get the free OpenOffice suite. And, get AVG Free from Download Free Anti-Virus | Homepage | Worldwide | AVG Free ... Norton & McAfee suck!

My uncle went mac a year ago and hasnt looked back. He even asks why he didnt go sooner. It was pricey, like 1200 for his laptop, but its light and super fast. It is going to be a learning curve but worth it to him. He is also a dinasour. As for me I'm just too cheap to switch. Try to find a mac store, very helpful.

Another option is to get a laptop on sale at Office Depot/CompUSA/BestBuy/etc. Just get one that OfficeDepot will be selling in limited quantities 'round Xmas shopping time (next Friday!).

In March 2008, I bought a Compaq F750 for around $300 ... if that.

When I got home, I formatted the drive in the process of loading Ubuntu.
You can download the ISO to make an install CD or download the installable version for a USB Stick.

Very Windows-like menuing system, but nothing like Windows when it comes to speed and security ... Linux does NOT need anti-virus and all that other crap!

You can even TRY Ubuntu, versus installing it, right from the same CD/USB installer, first!!

And, if you have a must-have Windows app, you can load WINE under which you would then install your preferred Windows app(s). I have and use WINE, as well.

ALL A/Vs suck 'cause they consume too many resources.

If you go with a MAC or with Linux (Ubuntu), you are safe from that crap w/o any AV software.

You will be amazed at the speed of Ubuntu, 'cause there's not startup hog volume like there is in Windows.

ALSO, go with an AMD Processor when at all possible. I have issues with Evil Inside (Intel Inside).

If you go with windows, be sure to get Win7 Pro so you can max out the RAM.

Imac's are the bomb. I switched over and wish I had done it sooner. EVERYTHING is so much easier once you get used to it.
