Hey Gun Buffs....
I am having trouble coming up with something for Christmas for my oldest son (16 yrs) He wants an AR. I am considering a M&P 15-22 model 811033 like this.
My thoughts are that if I get something bigger than a 22 he won’t shoot it as much because of the cost of ammo. The magazine holds 25 rounds and he could shoot this all day for $15-$20, that’s pretty cheap entertainment for shooting. Also looking for ideas for “add ons”, figured I would start with a front handle and some optics. Let me know if my logic is flawed here. BTW, we have larger guns to shoot for a bigger bang.

Why does he want an AR? There are AR clone .22s out there.
I have an AR and I went with this ProMag Archangel kit for my Ruger 10/22 and I like it. The kit is around $180.
Plus, with 2 Ruger 10/22s you can do this!

I haven’t shopped much for other brands. I have a buddy that has his FFAL and he gave me a price of $400 for the S&W. I really don’t want to spend more than $500. I just want to get him something to start with and build from there.
OBSIDIAN, that would really increase my odds squirrel hunting, lol.

This is my Ruger 10/22!...Oh yeh,...stock folded in here. You can even do the same kinda thing with a Marlin model 64! I think we've all had one of those before!

You can look into a coversion kit (new upper) on some models that will allow him to upgrade in the future to bigger calibre. Not sure which they are but I know the big name manufacturers (Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, Rock River, ect.) have them so you can swap from .22 to .223 at will.

The Ruger is my choice also. Here in SC at Dicks it sells for $225. They do have a Mossberg. 22 plinker that is an AR frame. Bought it....Hate it. Any AR you get make sure it come apart like a real AR so you can clean it properly. My son is 15 and asked for a Mosian 91. I bought it for him but wont buy the ammo. He also wanted the Ruger because of the crazy mods you can do to it.

GEt the Smith and Wesson M&P Sport Ar15 the buy the .22 bolt for it the gun will then be able to shoot 5.56 .223 and .22 for just a little over what you want to spend. I bought one of these all my buddies hate them cause they have no dust voer and no bolt assist. You are never gonna need a dust cover unless you are in the desert and ALL
AR15's come with a bolt assist its built into the bolt.
