Default patches on leather vests

I've never had leathers, but decided to get a leather vest to put some Patriot Guard patches on for the missions.....

Got some patches as well. Been looking around on the web to see how people put their own patches on.....bought a leather needle, thimble and some clear poly thread.....just not sure what type of glue to hold the patch on while I attempt to sew it.....never sewed before.....not gonna bother my wife with it. Want to do it on my own......anyone put patches on their own leathers without a machine? What's the best type of glue to hold the patch and still be flexible and not show through the patch? I know, sounds gay, especially for a "chopper site" - but for this purpose, something inside me tells me I need to do this myself. If anyone has done it, you can pm me to save face if it bothers you to post on it. .............OK, Steveo, I know your chomping at the bit to crack a bunch of jokes on this one....have at it....I can take it.

You tight ass pin them where you want them and take them to the cleaners or upholster shop and let them do the sewing. I can see them now if you do it probably look like something your up the road neighbor done.

LOL!!!!!! fortunately, he and I are nowhere near the same.... If it becomes too much of a pain, I'll take them.....don't really know any upholsterers around here.....figured it was something I could handle......I definitely want to put the one in memory of my father on the vest myself....

Forgot to mention that I wanted to glue in case my stitching came loose.....

Well if you want to stay as a tight ass you can get some thin two sided tape and just tape them on one at a time and sew them with a loop stitch. If you want to go to a fabric store, they would have a adhesive tape that will really stick the patch on. Depending on your leather thickness it may take some time to sew on your patches... I have four or five patches on my vest and it took me about three hours to put them on. The biggest thing in the location of the patch and where you want it to go.

It is easier to take them in to a patch store and have them done... and you do not have to pin them on, they will most likely ask where you want them and just mark with a cloth chalk on the location.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, it helps, thanks....no patch store around here though. There might be someone at the local harley accessory shop nearby...I can check. There was a place that sold harley accessories and sewed stuff, but they went out of business. I still at least want to do the memoriam patch for my dad myself though.....was looking at maybe using e6000 glue....anyone with experience with that glue and leather?

Look for police/fire uniform shops in your area, they always know someone that sews patches.

Most dry cleaners (laundries) have someone that sews and does alterations. Took mine to a local one and the lady sewed them on my leather vest. Charged about 3.00 each. For that price it's much better to have someone else do them!!

The East Coast patches I designed and ordered were actually iron-ons to start off. You can find plenty of iron-on patches that you can secure on your leather, as we did, then secure it by sewing. Like Taff said above, I had someone at my local cleaners do it professionally.

+1, It's not worth the effort sometimes to do it yourself.
