The owners manual says 87 is ok so that's what I've been running in it. I'm going to experiment with all the grades to see if it impact fuel mileage and performance but so far on 87 it's impressive. It's only got a little over 1000 miles on it now so if these mpg numbers remain the same and I continue to get 500 miles a tank, it will be another month before I get the premium fuel in it. I just refilled it with 89 at the end of last week.
The ecoBoost is the only gas engine that cannot run on E85 which I imagine is due to the turbo's. all the rest of the gas motors are Flex Fuel.
I've been a die hard Dodge Ram owner since 1992...I've had them all, gas and diesel, 6 to be exact since then and I loved the trucks but I HATED the fuel economy. My cummins never got over 19 on the highway and all the gas motors averaged 12 to 13 mpg's unloaded....Load one up with 10,000 lbs and your in the 8's. It sucked.
So when my 2006 Ram started getting close to 60K I started looking for a more fuel efficient truck without loosing towing capacity....I researched everything...Even Nissan and Toyota who surprisingly had some piss pore consumer reports ratings... I expected Toyota to have some very high ratings but not the case anymore... The Tacoma was ok ratings wise but the tundra had allot of consumer complaints. Mostly mileage and durability related.
My Brother, who is a tech at our local Dodge Dealer started telling me about this new ecoBoost last year. I began reading everything I could find on it and the more I read, the more impressed I became.... My brother (remember he works for Dodge) bought one in late 2010 so I followed last month...
You know somethings up when a Dodge tech goes out and buys a Ford LMAO.
It has some really innovative features which allow this engine to produce some serious numbers... How about 385hp and 420 ft lbs of torque with a tow capacity of 11,300 lbs. It peaks in power at 1900 revs and carries it throughout the powerband, not at 4000 like most gas engines...
*High pressure Direct injection w/ 3 valves per cylinder
*dual variable valve timing
*10.0:1 compression ratio
*Completely Forged bottom end with 4 bolt mains with two of the bolts cross drilled to eliminate flexing under severe loads.
*Turbo's are both oil AND water cooled to reduce exhaust temps
And the part I really like....The progressive shift 6 speed transmission. The transmission is completely adaptable to your driving habits and learns the driver to give you the most beneficial transmission shifting to your driving style. If you drive it hard it will hold gears longer and shift more firm, if you baby it, it will shift very soft and be in 5th or 6th gear by 35-40mph to maximize fuel economy. It also offers a Manual shift position where you can completely control the shifting which allows the driver to use the engine braking on a steep hill....If you don't go into manual mode and it has a trailer attached (which it knows) it will go into "Hill Decent" on it's own... it just does it later.
I find it really cool that it knows whether or not you have a trailer attached and it "Automatically" will control the trailer brakes in conjunction with the 4 truck brakes independently to eliminate any trailer sway that may occur.
Overall I am extremely impressed with this truck....I can't say enough good things about this ecoBoost.
I do know one thing....Both Chevrolet and Dodge better step up their game or Ford is going to walk off with the Full-Size truck market with mpg numbers like these. They just cant compete in gas mileage at the present.

ha ha ha Alan..... I'm going for a more "Blacked out" look this time around
on a side note, I've been looking around and haven't quite found anything that caught my attention yet. However I did run into a guy over in Orlando trying to sell his black Fury all covered in chrome....pretty much everything has been dipped including the swing arm and diff.... Problem is he wants $15,000 and it's got 14,000 miles on it.
