I really don't know anything about racing so please excuse my ignorance when I ask. Did this person crash racing or is he retired and died of natural causes. Just trying to understand.

Sorry to hear about his death. I Googled his name and found out that he died today in a multi car crash. Here is the link I found in New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/17/sp...s-IndyCar.html

I used to race Super Modifieds in the same league Davey Hamilton did. He also was in this race that killed Dan Wheldon. Davey crashed in the mid 2000's and almost lost his leggs, actually they wanted to amputate but Davey refused.
Open wheel cars are incredibly dangerous.
I kinda miss the speed from Super Mods, but I like being alive and complete more....

Found this old picture of me and the old Super Mod from 1998 at the Pikes Peak International Raceway, in case anybody was interested. I wasn't the fastest by a long shot, but going those speeds in anything will make your butt pucker.

he was racing today in Vegas. He was only 33. there was a wreck ahead and these cars travel about 215-225 mph. he tried his best to miss it but as you already know it didnt happen. his car became airborn and hit the fence above the wall cockpit first. in a nascar thats ok but these car have an exposed cockpit. so exposed helmet into a fence at probably 160 to 175 mph.
I got a chance to meet Dan in June. I'm a huge Nascar fan and we busted each others chops about each division of the sport. This year he was a part time drive but next year he was getting back in full time. Today was the last race of the season.
He didnt have to race today but was offered an award of $5 mil if he won. 2.5 for himself and 2.5 for a lucky fan. He said in practice yesterday he's hoping for a win just to make a fan as happy as he is just to race.
This sport lost a great man today. RIP Dan. "folks can argue if this is a sport or not all day long. But at the end of the day we do this for our fans"

As Tony Kanaan said " for a race driver, if you have to go that's the way!" I'm sure since Dan was his best friend he was being strong. My wife is a stylist and does some team members hair, she's devastated.Makes the troubles with my life look VERY trivial !!
