Default Tuning your after market air cleaner without a fuel controller

I've had this for a while but with all the talk lately about after market air cleaners I thought I'd share one of my solutions.

So I put a D2Moto spike with Thunder MFG adapter on my bike and as I have the stock pipes I thought I'd try without a fuel controller. With just the spike the bike lost a ton of power, there was way to much air and the bike was running lean. On the Australian spec bike the stock air cleaner has 2/3rd of the opening blocked off with a rubber plug. I measured the area that was open and calculated the area in Sq CM. Next I converted the area to a circular hole size and drilled out a piece of 3mm perspex (plexi glass). The restricter plate fits between the air filter element and the body of the spike. The hole size is 28mm (1 1/8") but after playing around I dropped it to 24mm and then to 21mm. You will need to adjust the hole size to suit your pipes and local conditions.

The fuel controllers add more fuel to restore the air to fuel ratio after we put a higher flow air cleaner on so my idea was to drop the air flow back to stock. The math is pretty easy but if you wanted to you could start with three plates made from 3mm (1/8") or 3/16" plywood while you're testing. With three plates drill a 3/4" hole in one, 1" hole in the next and a 1 1/4" hole in the last one. Start with the 1 1/4" and then go down in steps. When you find the size that works for you then make the final plate up with aluminium or perspex (plexi glass).
The air cleaner element in the D2moto fits a bit lose so you have 3 or 4mm that you can use for the restricter.

I didn't pull the plug out of my stock air filter, I keep that as my reference point. But with the spike, using the restricter plate I fixed the lean condition and got the bike running like stock again.
