Default The Cobra PowerFlo needs a rain sock - second time intake water shut bike down

Yesterday (Saturday, May 5, 2012), my bike suffered the second complete shutdown due to rain water entering the intake. The first time this happened, back in the Summer of 2011, I got caught in heavy rain like yesterday, and I was blowing steam out the back pipes after the bike stalled out while riding through the rain. Yesterday, same thing.

This is dangerous and scary. I have tried rigging up cotton mesh cloth around the intake, holding my hand in front of it (dangerous trick, let me tell you), etc. This intake needs a rain sock and needs it quick. I can find no reference to a rain sock Cobra makes for the PowerFlo and that astonishes me. Anyone have any advice I haven't tried (shy of switching out this intake for another) to cork the rain from this thing? I don't want to bend a rod or otherwise ruin my engine because this intake sucks in so much water when it rains, whether I drive fast or slow.

I'm curious to see what others have to say here. Been thinking of switching my original one into this intake.

What are rain socks made of? Would it be hard to make something? I have one also but I've yet to ride in a downpour but I have thought about it.......

I've been through hours of rain before and haven't had a problem.....although one wouldn't hurt.

Many aftermarket intakes have openings on the back side facing the throttle body (the stock one uses that exclusively) so if yours does you may be able to block the forward opening when it's raining. If not, you might still try that if you can create some open slots on the back just outside the edge of the air filter. This shouldn't hurt performance unless you are inclined to use WOT in the rain .

Default Rain Sock

Wimmer makes a rain sock for spike intakes!

I have not had an issue either, but now I'm concerned. I've seen motors hydrolock in the tuner world when a CAI takes water into the motor.

I've ridden my Fury with this intake in three very heavy downpours and have not had any problem. I'm surprised to see this thread. I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing problems in the rain with this intake. I wonder why it's causing you problems.

Default Really interesting

I have ridden in a few heavy down pours with no problems but i never had a chance being caught in the rain to look at my exhaust to see if water vapor was coming out? also the normal rain on the pipes would cause steam?

but if you look at the design on this unit as the air flows inside there is even a small deflector so its not 100% direct to the filter, that coupled with all the side surface area to pull in air i find it interesting why this problem occurs.

i have even sprayed a hose during cleaning right into the grilled mesh intake port?

is there anything that could be restricting the sides from pulling in air?

I have done the same thing with no problems. I think there is even a hole in the bottom to let excess water drain.
