But inquiring minds want to know if you found which squish washer is missing, the front or the rear?

BTW, I have never seen a mechanic use a torque wrench on a filter .
Regardless, either filter definitely should not be installed more than hand tight.

.
OK I should have used the words "screwed on" instead of torque.

While changing my oil for the first time this past weekend, I encountered some extra parts on my bike not mentioned or shown in the photos from the manual. There is a canister mounted directly in front of the oil filter which made removing the filter impossible until I unmounted this canister. I was then able to get the filter replaced but I'm curious what this canister is for and why it is not pictured in the Honda manual.

It looks to be a fuel overflow capture or something but before digging around I figure I would ask here first. This is a CA bike by the way, so perhaps it is something added to bikes here to meet some state specific requirements?

From what I gather and post from Clueless above... it's the Charcoal Canister on the CA Model
Also Seņor Gar says its there on the ABS Model aswell

It is the charcoal can, fuel vapor from the tank is routed into it where it is absorbed and stored while the engine is stopped. When the engine is running, the purge control valve opens the vapors are drawn into the engine thru the intake manifold. . CARB requirement. Did you mean behind the filter, as in toward the rear of the bike ?

Don't ignore the valves! You may be tempted to try to save time/money by only doing the oil change for the 600 mile service. Don't do it! When I did mine, two of my valves needed adjusting. One intake valve was super tight.

It's up to you whether you want to do the valves yourself or have the dealer do them for you. But you should know that the dealer will charge you a ridiculously high amount for a relatively cheap and easy job. A feeler gauge only costs a couple bucks at an auto-parts store.

I adjusted my valves at 500 miles and changed the oil at 600 miles. In case you are wondering why I didn't do the oil change at the same time as the valves... Particles may have got into the engine during the valve adjustment. I wanted to let any possible particles work their way to the oil filter before the oil change. If you have the dealership do the work, doing it this way and bringing your bike in twice may cost you some extra cash. If you aren't confident enough to do your own valves, consider at least changing the oil yourself.
my good man, you have inspired me thusly: this weekend I shall purchase by any means, all the necessary parts and liquids with which to mollify the oil-cravings of my baby.

sir, you do Rock, sir.
