I thought this was pretty high, so I told him I think I will pass. I could tell he was getting pissed, he asked me why? I told him I thought that it was a bit much. He said with the mods. they are doing that the Honda warranty wouldn't cover most of what could go wrong. I am having them put on Cobra pipes, hypercharger, PCV. I asked if I could get it at another time, but he said this offer was only today, meaning I can get it later but pay more.
1. Did I make a huge mistake? I am not very mechanical
2. Can I go to another Honda dealership around here and get a extended warranty from them.
This is the first new anything that I have purchased so I need some help. Thank you in advance. Take care.

Purchased my new Fury last Friday. Dealer told me I had up to 12 months to decide about the extended warranty. cost was $500 + Change for 5 years.

I was quated $900 for a 4 year H.P.P. (whatever that is) with Road Side Assistance. Without road side assistance, it was $800.
Price's are all over the board here. Are we all comparing the same thing? Apples to Apples?

Yes, everyones comparing the same thing. The average dealer charges double of their cost on a warranty, but there are some that charge whatever they think they can get, as extreme as $1200 for that warranty. I think just about any dealer will take $500 if you walk in the door and tell them you know what they pay for it and you will pay no more than $500.

Thanks for clarifying that. In your expert professional opinion, would you get one for the Fury?

Honestly I've been debating with myself over whether I will be getting the warranty in a few months when I buy my fury. I'm leaning towards getting one. If you get the warranty at $500, then you are paying $125 per year for the extended coverage. Our current labor rate at our shop is $65/hr, so two hours of labor exceeds what you pay for the warranty per year. That is without even taking the cost of parts into consideration. The only reason I am even considering not getting the warranty is because I'm friends with the mechanics (free labor after hours) and get a good discount on parts. In my expert professional opinion, an extra 4 years of warranty for $500 gives a lot of peace of mind.

Lying bastard
The sales manager where I bought the bike hit me up in the last minutes of finalizing all the paperwork with the extended warranty thing ... they know full well that at that time you're anxious to get out the door and less likely to think the thing through. He told me $800 and I said I'll just add it later and he looked me right in the eye and lied thru his teeth and says " well sure you can do that but it'll be at least $1200 no matter where you go if you get it later" ... not knowing any better I went ahead with it, only to find out later you can get it any day of the week for $500 from directline parts; exact same warranty straight from honda:
Direct Line Parts - Honda Fury VT1300CX Warranty
Actually at the time it was only $450; DLP had a price increase since then but still $500 beats $800 any day of the week. To top it off, I found out later he didn't even sell me the straight Honda warranty; it was with a place called "Cornerstone" which does all their yamaha and Suzuki warranties, and which is apparently a pretty good place but still it wouldn't be shit for resale to say you have an extended 4 year warranty with some place no one's ever heard of.
So I called cornerstone and yeah I can cancel it, on a pro-rated basis, even though I'm still in full coverage first year of Honda's warranty; I'll get back about $600-$650 or so of the $800 I paid - and even that is NOT returned as cash - they roll it into the original balance of what you financed on the bike so I still have to pop for another $500 for a new warranty from Honda.
But I'm still doing it, even if I just break even, just cause being ripped off by some lying, gladhanding S.O.B. of a used-car cycle salesman pisses me off so much.
Is $500 for a 4 year bumper-to-bumper extended warranty worth it? Yeah, I think so, even though it isn't cheap. Read some of the customer comments on the warranty on DLP's website - there's been problems but I'll still go with it personally.

Bank let me redo my loan, warranty 500,but instead of getting a check for the dealer for that amount I tacked on another 400,toy shopping money at the delaership in the parts department.Payment only went up 12 bucks. As long as I have the warranty the dealership will give me discounts on anything I purchase, they have already saved me 250-300 bucks on parts,so for the next 4 years I have the warranty and I get like 20% discounts on my purchases.HELLS YEA...

That is Honda Protection Plan, and maybe not, some dealers offer "in house" extended warranties that are worthless anywhere but that dealer. The HPP is good at all Honda dealers. You can usually get better roadside from your insurance co. I got a letter from Honda that said some thing like "we noticed that you chose not to get the HPP, if you where charged for it or think you have it, please see your dealer." I have personally seen people come in screaming about their warranty, and had to show them that the "other dealer" that sold them the bike, sold them a "warranty" that was good only thru them.

I don't know about average dealers, Honda has a suggested price, and a dealer net price. it is the dealers option to sell it for what he/she wants, just like anything else. That's why some people get a bike for $11,300 and some get the same for $12,995 a volume dealer (like HDL) can sell for less because they plan to sell alot more. You have 364 days from the sale to get the HPP, shop around.

No, I feel that if something is going to go wrong, it will be in the first year. Remember, the warranty is only as good as the guy doing the paperwork. I have only done 2 warranties in 3 years on VTXs, both were starter switches, both were on bike with big honkin driving lights that are never turned off. So those guys were happy, ( $500 warranty, $140 repair, you be the judge).
