Yeah, I appreciate all the good info and knowledge in this thread. I have till May 17 to make up my mind. Since my bike is in the shop right now for a clunking sound coming from the drive shaft or hub is what got me thinking about it even more. I was just cruising along at about 25-30 mph and all of a sudden I heard a clanking and clunking sound like a bolt in a tin mixer. I called the shop today and they still don’t know what it is, but they did ride it and hear it for themselves.
If I ask the dealer to sell it to me for $500 and they refuse, then I buy it online for $500, will they jerk me around when it comes time to get work done?

Having a warranty or not having one is just a gamble that we take on a piece of machinery that we expect to mechanically perform everytime we hit the start button, twist the throttle, change a gear, etc, etc.Yes Honda is a dependable brand, but its still a machine that can breakdown, have defects and so forth,no machine is bulletproof, even though we expect it to be and get frustated when it has issues.A warranty is like any kind of insurance, hope that we dont have to use it,but we are thankful for it if we do.For 500 bones over a 4 year period on a machine that I will be making a payment on at the same time is not a bad gamble at all,its piece of mind knowing that I have the coverage, not a big loss if I dont have dont have to use it,and a wise investment if I do.

That all depends on the dealer, IF Honda sees that Sumo kit on the rear, they will most likely say you voided the warranty, if your dealer installed that kit, they may or may not warranty it and not tell Honda about the kit ( the same as all the Goldwing trikes out there, Honda can and has declined alot of work because of the modifications done)

My dealer did install my Sumo kit and said they didn’t think it would have any impact. The thing that made me scratch my head was that after all the money I have spent there and they know I do my homework, to quote a $900 price.

Richard,THATS THE KEY!ALL THE MONEY YOU HAVE SPENT THERE.Maybe you need to remind them of that, thats exactly what my dealerships manager said to his GM,and then she caved. You have given them some MAJOR JACK with that sweet ride that you have and they know it.Let them know that other dealerships are giving it up for 500 clams and you expect the same courtesy. Its the same warranty as Directline and they know it.

If they give you any hassle over the $500, just put it into perspective for them. Tell them you are giving them the opportunity to make ~ $100 on the warranty, and then 4 years of work on any warranty issues that may come up with the bike. If you have work done over the four years, they will make money from Honda on the labor and the warranty parts. From the amount of work you've had done there, they would be foolish to not give you the warranty at that price. I will make $1 on a part or accessory before I allow a customer to go spend his money online. A dealership has to do what it takes to establish long term relationships with its customers to compete with the internet and mail order.

American Honda tells me that a different branch of Honda handles the warranty in Florida only. The American Honda Service Contract Corporation handles motorcycle warranties in Florida, and requires in state dealers to sell warranties.

dealers do not make any money on "warranty parts" Honda reimburses the dealer the dealer cost on the parts, and usually make nothing on the labor, usually loosing money in the labor costs. (Last summer we replaced a wiring harness on a new Goldwing, took 4 days of pin checking, wire chasing, etc. to narrow it down to the harness, had to get Honda approval to replace the wire harness, service tech from Honda came by gave the OK, 1 day to strip down, pull and reroute new harness, 1/2 day to re assemble the Wing and test ride. Honda paid 12 hrs labor. That is how much was MADE on that warr. issue, and that is why most dealers don't like warranty work.)
