Okay, let me start this by saying I am not in a good mood right now.

As some of you know from some of my other post, I am now having a problem with my final drive or hub. Tuesday I started getting a “clunking” sound so I took it in to the shop. Today, they tell me they still don’t know for sure what it is until they get it all tore apart. They are going to approach this as a “warranty” issue, but wanted me to know that Honda may not approve it because I have the 250 Tire Kit installed. For those of you that don’t know, the major mod is “notching” out the swing arm and welding in the needed support. Everything else lines up and fits right back together. They said if Honda request pictures or anything, they may deny it. I’m not a mechanic, but if they don’t honor the warranty, I think it is a bunch of BS. The service manager said he will have it taken apart and know what the problem is by noon tomorrow. However, he won’t know if Honda will cover the repair for maybe 2 weeks! I think this is crazy. I am thinking about telling them to fix the damn bike so I can ride it and hash it out later with Honda. If Honda covers it great, if they don’t I guess I lose. Am I being unreasonable?

That sux, I gave you my opinion yesterday however, sounds to me like an install problem, not a manufacture defect, and the installing dealer should pony up, especially if he had already told you it shouldn't be a problem as you said yesterday.

Sorry to here of your troubles!!!

Warranty claims can get complicated, they might offer some coverage (in-house/service manager) since I thought you got it done there, lets hope they cover it all for you!

How long was P&L warranty on 250 modification?

Best of luck with it!

Honda paid 12 hrs labor. That is how much was MADE on that warr. issue, and that is why most dealers don't like warranty work.)
I'll agree to disagree. Our dealership loves warranty jobs because we have experienced techs that can usually diagnose a problem pretty quickly and perform the work faster than Honda's projected labor hours. Of course there is an occasional job that runs over, but overall we benefit from the work. Honda pays anywhere from 20-40% over dealer cost for our warranty parts. Heck... we are and orange level KTM dealer and get paid double of dealer cost on KTM warranty parts.

Quess I am wrong AND a lousey tech. Honda flat rate on that wire harness is 4.2 hours (we were paid 12) the flat rate on the starter switch (I have done a couple of those) is .6 hrs.

I wasn't insinuating that you were a bad tech at all. Actually I didn't even know you were a tech. I was just making the statement that some dealers do well with warranties with the right people and policies in place. Sometimes the additional warranty income can be a bargaining point for a customer trying to get a reasonable deal on a warranty.

Still not 100% sure yet and should know by Monday evening. Bike is apart and they are still looking into some possibilities, but it doesn’t appear at this point to be anything major. Sounds like it will be an easy fix if it is what they think it is. I don’t want to speculate at this point. As soon as I know 100%, I’ll let you know.

Got my bike back today so I am now a happy camper. Turns out it wasn’t any big deal and the shop got me up and runnin again. Therefore, I have been playing hooky today and trying to rack up some miles.
