I have been fighting a horrible rattling sound for about a week. I was sure it was coming from the fairing but After tweaking my fairing every freaking night and not solving the issue, tonight I took a short ride, left it in first and got the RPMs up and left them there and started touching, pushing, pulling on things up front.... I know, not a safe way to ride but I was going insane, seriously.
Well I finally found it, it is actually the speedometer housing vibrating.
All I had to do to stop it was place my hand on top of the bezel.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Is it fixable?
Or do I need to get the dealer to replace it?
I have a plan in mind but wont know for sure till I open it up.
I am going to try to do it tomorrow night, but it may drift to Friday or Saturday.
I will post pictures of the "fix" and report on the process and results when its done.
I had the same thing happen after I put cannella handle bar risers on. Last night I it took the speedo housing apart and put 3/8" thick by 1/2" wide foam strips under the housing. One side the foam has adhesive on it and I just stuck it to the speedo so when I put the housing back on it would keep it from vibrating. I bought the foam at menards, i believe it is weather stripping. I did that and it no longer rattles.
I may try that. Go for the easier answer first.
I was planning to put a cross hatch pattern heavy bead of silicone on the inside and a small bead on the inside lip to act almost as an o-ring then reassemble when its all dry.
I got home last night at 8:00. Sat down and tried to relax but just couldn't do it. At just after 8:30 I grabbed my daughter, tools and flashlight and went out and uncovered the bike.
Between working in the dark and just trying to just "get it done" I didn't take any pictures but it went smoothly.
Take out the 2 screws on the bottom of the speed-o housing and the housing comes down with just a little prying.
I wound up using a piece of open cell foam about 1.25" X 4.0" x .5" thick. There is a tiny pad in there that is supposed to stop the vibration but it is too small (thin) to do the job. I didn't even need to use adhesive, the .5 thick fit perfectly between the speed-o and the housing, compressing about 25% of its thickness.
I had it all put back together and was back in my chair before 9:00.
Rode in this morning and even tried to make it vibrate but it was solid as can be!
Glad I found this thread. I have been currently experiencing the "Death Rattle" for a little less than a month on my 2015.
I suspected it was the speedometer housing but it is kinda hard to pinpoint this problem because it only occurs (like others have stated) riding along at higher rpms.
Thank you guys for documenting how you fixed this. I'm gonna try to use this info tomorrow evening. :toast:
