We just returned from our vacation to St. Augustine. We rode around 150ish miles a day. The wind averaged 15-20 mph and from all sides. I got blown around a good bit, My wife was riding behind me on Saturday and noticed me fighting the wind (she said she could see my triceps flexing). It was a headwind and made it fairly difficult above 60. I am 6'4 and do have the small boulevard windshield. Honestly it wore me out. I tried moving elbows in, elbows out. Made sure my grip was as loose as possible. Tire pressure dead on. Leaned forward, leaned back. Kept my legs as tucked as best I could. My previous bike was a VTX1800c with no windshield and an 8 degree rake, It rode fine in the same conditions although it was heavier. Is this nature of the beast or should I be looking for an issue? Or is it just a loose nut behind the handlebars?
I put a memphis shades sportshield on mine. And had custom footboards made to keep my legs stationary. Had my bike in hi winds and found the wind to mostly blow the bike in the direction of the wind. But I don't think I had the awful time you had with the wind.
Hey I just tried out my Memphis shades big shot today, I prefer straight wind in my face than the annoying updraft. I guess my question is what or if u found a poison for your windshield that reduced updraft ?
It's definitely the nature of the beast [emoji22]
Some bike will do better than others depending on the shape but it's rough when you don't have a full on windshield and/or front fairing.
Friend and I rode through similar conditions last summer, it was tiring. He was on a Road Glide and felt nothing...
I'm 6'3 and when I purchased the bike it had the same windshield already on it. After riding it for awhile I was curious to as to how much the windshield actually helped. So I took it off, and instead of the majority of the wind hitting me in the face it was directed in other places, and it made the ride more enjoyable.
Still take a lot of wind it, but that's what you get with a bike like ours. But yes I found it more enjoyable and I think it looks better without that windshield on.
By fitting the 8deg tree only, you decrease the trail; which has the effect of decreasing the effect of crosswind.
But then you also cause the bike to be that much less stable.
OK, I know, I just started a firestorm.
Or we could all just suck it up and put our big boy pants on and not be a vagina and embrace the wind smacking us in the face and just figure that it builds character.... That's what I do.... And boy am I a character.... Lol
When I first got this bike, I was surprised how the wind blew me around, but like you say, that's just how it is. It didn't take me long to get used to it and it doesn't bother me now. It's a motorcycle after all and I can't stand the look of a fairing or windshield on it.
A while back I test rode a Gold Wing thinking I might give up the chopper and ride more comfortably. It was boring riding that big Wing with the big windshield. Felt like I was in a car with the windows down. I guess it was just too comfortable for me and I didn't get the fun of riding a bike like I do with the Fury.
I had the Boulevard Screen and 15" Rifle screen replacement, which stopped the buffeting I endured on the 85 mile ride to the house from the dealership. I still found the sail effect on arms/shoulders and hands were exposed in cold weather wind, which is important on morning commute.
I recently installed a VN Custom fairing which blocks the airflow from the neck to the waistline and hand to hand. I like it!

I just got back from the same place, and those RT 95 winds can be BRUTAL. Idc about the wind beating me in the face, chest, etc....what gets me is the way it pushes the bike around. Like Kbuskill said, the skinny front tire picks up any groove in the road and takes you away. I did a turn and burn from Daytona to Jacksonville, and by the time I got back I needed a damn nap after holding on! But you'll get use to it, its worth the slower speed than everyone else for the looks your bike gets once you reach your destination.
If a little wind in ur face is a deal breaker, maybe, just maybe you purchased the wrong vehicle and adopted the incorrect life style/hobby.
Consider panties and a Prius.
The larger the area the greater the effects of the wind from the front, sides or back there is on all motorcycles. Aerodynamic and drag can add to it or reduce the effect. Poor or well maintain bike can effect how well or not the rider can control that. Tires brand IMHO have little to do with wind and more to do with tread patterns and road grooves that can make the bike wounder around a bit(like a metal grooved bridge). Yes and riding a naked bike it adds to the fatigue, if you don't believe me try coming up on a 53' 18 wheeler at 75 mph you will star to feel it well before you consider the vehicle. It feel as if someone it beating you with a towel left and right as hard as they can. As me and my buddy when we go on trips travel 450 to 500+ miles a day yes I do need a fairing, look at the attached picture. But for local rides I enjoy my naked Fury and my half-helmet. Also here in New York beside reducing the wind noise it extends our riding season. I can go out all day in 30 degrees temperature and snow on the side out the road.
I hear ya! Last night a persistent foul wind had me all over my lane, almost crossed into oncoming traffic a couple times because of it! Very annoying! That's when I realized: having the constant farts while riding can be hazardous to your safety! So no more burritos before riding!
Update: We are in Kentucky visiting on the bikes. On the way up I noticed a wobble in the front end. Today I took it to a local shop. I figured the front tire was out of balance. I explained the issue and mentioned the bike has always been a handful to ride especially at higher speeds or in a crosswind. Front tire was removed and checked. No rim/tire problem. We googled the head bearing torque and it was checked. It was correct. Still have the wobble. Mechanic took it for a spin and said "you can have that thing" I'd never ride it. Something isnt right. They advised getting it to a honda dealer Asap. I bought it used with 1500 miles on it. I attributed it's drivability issues to nature of the beast. Any idea where I can look next? I'm in the middle of nowhere with a couple hundred miles to a honda dealer who can't promise they can even get me in.Stock rake, stock rims, new metzeler tires. I'm at a point of having to buy/rent a truck to get it home as they have me scared to ride it the 700+ miles back home. Any suggestions would be helpful at this point.
There are many members here that will have some good suggestions however two things come to mind. 1) Are the neck bearings Ok and not damaged? They might be torqued corectly but if they are damaged no amount of tweaking will help. 2) Was the bike dropped? Maybe something is out of alignment.
It's a very long shot but is the new tyre OK? On a previous bike I had it came with some cheap Chinese tyres and no amount of weights helped the front tyre, it just wobbled and shook the bike everytime I got over 80 KPH (50 MPH). It turned out that the tyre was out of round, right from the factory. As I said a long shot with a Metzeler but something to think about.
Thanks for the info. The bike has never been dropped as long as I've owned it. They actually deflated the tire and removed it from the rim. They said imperfections sometimes won't show mounted/inflated. They found no issues with the front tire. I'm at a loss. I did a search last night and I'm thinking the bearings may be damaged. I'm away from my garage and tools. My wife's uncle has a big shop I'm taking it over this evening and tearing it down. Figured I'd check the run out on the front wheel also.
The Fury's design makes it "interesting" at low speeds and in corners, but it's pretty good in a straight line. The lack of weight coupled with the design makes it a handful in the wind--downright unpleasant in really strong and gusty wind. (Note: Don't drive a "chopper" in the wind....)
The factory Metzlers (2016) are awesome, they never wander, no matter what the odd line I cross, even in a lean--very impressed with them.
The Fury is the biggest P.O.S. when touring. Carrying capacity is zero, it looks like shit with bags, any wind and it wanders everywhere, and cleaning it is a b!^ch. 400 mile days on that suspension get old, even with a C&C seat (which I don't find much if any better than stock). 5th gear needs longer legs, and the engine needs more displacement.
For short runs, however, it's a lot of fun, and I love the bike. It's not my *favorite* bike, but it is the best looking and everyone else loves it, so it makes the grade.
