So I figured this should go in the general section and not the performance threads since I have a dilemma...

So I called today to schedule the 600 mile check-up and the dude who sold me the bike didn't know what I was talking about so he sent me to service where I was connected to the 'cocky know-it-all' old guy, and he begins to tell me that I don't have to check the valves as it is a costly endeavor and all I should do is change the oil and the shaft oil...

after that I said, "But Honda specifically states that I need to check the valves",

where he replied, "Listen I have been doing this for 20yrs and I have never had to check them at 600miles maybe at 6k but not at 600".

I'm at a loss here? Should I just check them myself, and if I do what do I need, I don't need any special techy torque tools do I?

I'm kinda of taken back by all this since they were hell bent on making me buy the bike yet they don't want to service it the proper way? has anyone seen there valves out of whack after the first 600, do really need to worry about this, cause I know if I don't get'em done I'll be paranoid at every sound I hear coming from the engine...

This is what they did / adjusted to mine

Changed oil and filter.
Changed reaf diff fluid
Adjusted Vaves (rear cyl ok) front cyl loose intake adjusted.
Adjusted clutch and throttle freeplay, then lubed cables.
Set tire PSI (fancy way of saying the added air to the tires)
Check brake pads -ok
Topped off coolant.
Lubed chassis
Inspect all lights and functions and tighten hardware(left mirror)

I believe there is another topic covering this issue.

My dealer also told me that it wasn't necessary to check the valves.
At 6000 km they are going to check them.

Ericegg, check Thread, alignment marks on crank by JADO, Post 12, by Blufury, on Cluless'es Tutorial. On what you should do, I can't comment! Maybe Clueless will come on, Honda Mechanic, or 460 Brevill, has custom shop.

Yeah been reading all day on this and quite frankly a little irritated at my dealer for saying not to worry... well he didn't put 13k into this bike, and I'll be damn if I'm going to take it to them for service, if honda wants it done then I'm gonna have it done, I'll just find another dealer which will do it. But if I took it to them and didn't have'em check and something should happen I couldn't live with myself.

found a dealer 30miles away from me which do it all for $175, and he laughed as I told him the 'other' dealer wouldn't do it... I'll be with out the ride for 2 days but the peace of mind goes a long way right, my confidence in this dealer is higher than where I bought the bike...

well ericegg01 you might lose a couple of days of riding but you are getting a good price on the service, my 600 mile service was somewhere between 250-300 and it still took them a couple days to get the bike back to me. like you I would rather get it done like it's supposed to according to the service schedule instead of not getting it done and then something happen later on and then someone tell me that since I didn't get the service done on time that it's my fault something is wrong. after I retire in about a year <military> I can start getting these tools so I can do more myself, can't buy everything I want or need as the military has weight limits on household goods if they have to move you so that's why I don't have a lot of tools.

your other dealer is a pile of crap if he is telling you not to do the proper service.if you dont have a service pak to pay for it you still need to get it done.it tellas in your owners pak what is to be done at the 600.valves are to be checked and adjusted.if there is no record of it it may affect your waranty.keep records of everything.i also got the 5 year warranty.dont have to touch the bike for 5 years.
