I’m now looking for aircraft foam if anybody has any leads for me. I would think 2” minimum should work. I stopped at an upholstery shop today and they agreed with the aircraft foam. However, he said you had to have a thick enough piece to cut and mold to the contours of the seat pan. You can’t just lay it in there. Sounds logical, but is it necessary?

MeanCityCycles suggest Impact gel with memory foam. Upholstery guy suggested not going this way because it will not give you the soft ride desired for long distances.

C&C said their seat pan’s are made of fiberglass and form to the stock set up. They did not think their seat could be modified for my bike.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!:)

Hi-Tech Foams have “Confor” foam which is used in the aircraft industry. There suggestion is...
1”x16”x18” Soft Density for Top Layer
1”x16”x18” Medium Density for Middle
1”x16”x18” Firm Density for Bottom

Each piece is $18.50 so $55.50 total.

Thanks Mental!:)

They also have a 2", look again. Or you can bond 2 1" pieces with foam adhesive. And check out the other suppliers. This foam is contoured then covered with a lighter foam, and then a thin imperfection sheet to go under cover so no minor imperfections show thru. There are good tutorials on INTERNET for doing your own seat, or possibility of good upholstery shop.

Cee Bailey’s does custom seats using this same foam. They quoted me $250 to send my seat to them and they would put the padding in and recover with my existing seat leather. My local upholstery guy said he would do it for $40. Think I will buy the materials and have it done local. $95.50 vs. $250 – No Brainer.

Custom Seat Covers & Recushioning System

"The Confor foam is pressure and temperature sensitive, and "reads" body temperature and pressure and shapes to the person using a lateral creep process. Its low rebound action permits blood to flow constantly, preventing ischemia, or that burning sensation known as "monkey butt". We work with standard materials in more effective ways than other manufacturers through complex and effective product designs. You simply cannot replace "bad" material with "good" material to fix a seat problem. All seats are customized for each rider, there is no "one size fits all" which would make the manufacturing easier for us."

This whole thing seems like a great find for all of us, at least those who plan to modify their seats. We all owe a big "Hats-Off" to Mental and Richard1 for bird-dogging the facts and particulars.

Cheers

When the other CB gets around to packing up his OEM seat, i will be looking into this as well, having a local shop re-wrap new foam.
I think you guys are on to something here; i had 1" add'l foam layerd to the pillion last year by Sergent's. Made a world of difference for the passenger ride. ($100)

uh, is it finished yet?
I wish. The foam company is at a trade show this week and will not be able to ship till the 15th. Upholstery shop is booked to first week in August, so hopefully by the middle of August I will have something to report back on.

I have continued to look for other options, and have not found anything better.

Be careful when someone tells you it's aircraft grade. We use a different density and crush for the the crew seats and just plain medium for the passenger seats. If interested ill see if we have any old ones laying around at work you can use for an experiment.

Richard,
Are you saying the stock seat or C&C seat does not fit the sumo fender and I would have to buy another seat if I get the sumo kit?
I thought your fender was made to fit the stock seat? And if it's made to fit the stock seat then it should fit the C&C seat?
Thanks.

With the Sumo kit, the struts are on the outside of the fender. With the stock seat, you will need to trim an inch or so from the bottom so it does not hit the struts. The seat is easily cut with tin snips and is no big deal. The guy at C&C told me that I could not trim their seat and it would not work, so I dropped it.
