I tried WD-40 and mineral spirits-both products removed a small amount. I thought about trying some type of heavy duty cleaner but I was hoping that someone would know of some type of product that is made for this type of problem.

Gary, I bet Clueless has something for that in his bag of tricks. Also when I did fire damage jobs we used smoke sponges to clean items damaged by soot, they simply absorb the soot, $4. The new Mr Clean dry erasers work on the same principle, think graphite pencil, eraser, its a sacrifical sponge, Liquids generaly just smear the soot.

Ketchup.....???.....like the condiment made from tomatoes? I wonder if its the acidity from the tomatoes and or vinegar that works and if it is, why not just try a lemon?
Hmmm, idea... maybe we should try Coke (seriously)... works on everything else... :D ... but, WD40 worked pretty good on mine, then again... kind of dug into it to get it to work...
