If you don't go too much over 800 miles, should be fine.. Get it done though

When is the next one due? I forgot; is it 3,000 or 5,000 miles? I'm around 3,300 now.
That's about right if you drive your bike a little hard you should change it soon, but if you drive it like a sane person, you can hold off till 4k or even 5k (read your manual) if you are wanting to save some cash for a minute. Also suggest doing the oil change yourself, it's not that bad actually and will save on labor costs.

Oil change myself yes, but I thought it would be a good idea for them to check the valves, since they didn't do it the first time.

They checked my valves and changed the oil on my 600 mile service. If you are mechanically inclined and know what you are doing you can do it yourself. They do crack the filter and inspect the filtration media to check for abnormal metal shavings signifiying a larger problem but thats about it.

I did mine at 946 miles and the mechanic at the Honda dealer said it was a Honda so it would be fine.

It's more about a warranty thing, that first inspection, that is why it is best to try and stick to that number as closely as you can... But agreed, Honda makes a damn good engine.

According to Honda 8,000
What should we expect to pay?
In OC more than here.

A lot of shops (where I work included) recommend more like 1000 miles for the first service, we charge about $185 depends on the price of the oil, (2.5 hrs labor @ $60/hr). Honda recommends 8,000 miles between oil changes and also 8,000 for next valve adjustment and spark plugs. . We recommend 3,000 or so on oil, but I know many on the VTX board go 6-10,000 miles between oil changes, most of them use synthetic

Ummm, aren't you checking the valves during that time...? Should cost more than that for the first one, nice deal and all... but, thought we had to get the valves check the first run a-around to make sure everything was lining up right?

Honda recommends 600 miles for your first service work but most bike mechanics will tell you to wait until you have a least 1000 miles on it for better engine break in period before having the valves adjusted. I would definitely have it done so you do not void the warranty and for your own piece of mind. The going dealer rate for this work in my area is between $275 and $340. Good Luck!

Yes, 1st service (600 - 1000 miles), check valves, change oil/filter, change final drive oil, check coolant and brakes, check over, adj clutch, check tires etc.
We charge 185 2.5 hrs labor (typo in other post) @ 60/hr on V twins for the 1st, plus oil/filter, and they seem to go up all the time.

I was quoted around $200 + parts at one Honda dealer (that only sells Hondas) and $300 + parts every where else. I know thats a deal and I dont doubt their work....just wanted to get a sense of the going rate. Also, I dont want to get in the door and after everything is take apart they say its closer to $300.

Since the bike is on the rack, this is a good time to do your first round of mods. At the 600 mile service I did the exhaust and Kury lizard lights. Hopefully, I saved a few bucks. It’s all downhill after that…
