Fuggin Reaper turning brown

4993 Views 44 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  woodenhorse
I installed my Fuggin Reapers about two weeks ago. I have less than 50 miles on them. I took a close look at them today and noticed that right near the engine, the rear pipe is turning brown. Anyone else experirnce anything like this with newly installed pipes? I bought the pre-set controller with them so I'm assuming all the settings are correct and all should be well. Any thoughts?

Ha, was going to post something on this today... Wanted to take pics of all my settings first before I did it, but am caught up in homework atm... I don't have the reapers, but I do have the FC...

The "copper" tone or brown, haven't quite looked at that yet though, but will tomorrow when I get a chance to take off my heat shields. Might run down to my bike shop and pick up some blue jobs ;) So I can clean off my pipes and start fresh with them.

I think I have mine tuned though, as I am now getting 105 MBL (miles before light) and I have pretty good acceleration off the start from this bike. When I first got the FC, I was only getting about 86 MBL a few days ago before I started to play with it, so quite the improvement. Also contacted Doug about this and have just about eliminated all of my deceleration popping that I was getting after my initial tuning. Sounds great and runs good now.

Bad to the main subject, I can't remember off the top of my head what will cause the copper tone to it, think it's leaning, but I'm pretty sure one of these guru's around here will tell ya! As mine are blue and have been blue ever since I put them on... lol... :/

Anyways, will report back on this subject later tonight or tomorrow, determining on mood of gf.

Yes, it is a lean condition. The coppertone (Yellowing) is an indicator. I would bump up a LITTLE not a lot if there is no blue.:)
Red, you doin homework and on the bottle? Check your spellin..

Lol, actually... yes and yes... Think you guys know me too well now... rotfl...
Thanks for the input. Think I'll pull out my instructions and try to adjust a little.

I couldn't believe it, but the other day my light didn't come on until 115 miles. It usually comes on very close to 100 miles, and I haven't adjusted shit. Of course I'm running the Fi2000r at the standard settings, so who knows what it's doing? Bike still seems to run fine though. I still have this huge urge to bump them up just to see what happens.
For my last 2 fillups, my light came on at 112 & 118.

Richard, I forget, what fuel controller are you using? Ahh....nevermind! I know it's the same as mine, only you have your pot settings way up there. Hmm....now I really want to bump mine up!
Next question....does anyone know if there is a way clean up the brown/copper discoloration? Chrome polish doesn't touch it...just makes ir shiney.

Painter....Keeping in mind that I'm a bit of a novice at this, what exactly do you mean when you say "bump up a little"? The Fuggin controller has 6 six settings.
1) For additional fuel added under cruise conditions.
2) For additional fuel added during acceleration.
3) For additional fuel added during full throttle conditions
The last 3 are adjustments to determine when the above 3 conditions either shut off (1) or turn on (2 & 3).

Not quite sure what I should try.
Sorry Sundance, but I have the Cobra and don't know what Fuggin recommends for fine tuning. Call Doug and he will tell you how to adjust. If you're just getting the 'copper' color, you will not need a whole lot of adjustment but need a little more fuel.

As I was trying to put before but was a bit inebriated, I will try to post something this week about it... Just got done installed my rear LED's from Radiantz and don't feel like messing with anything now cause I feel good about the install...errr, for the most part (have to adjust one of my brackets).

Anyways, how is your take off speed, same as stock or a little faster? That is the first mode bump that up 1/2 to 1 spot then see if that changes things, the cruise conditions are the most important for fuel conservation btw, so if you seem to be getting less MBL (miles before light) than before, adjust that one first. The 4th mode is for deceleration "popping" I suppose, think I have mine set to like 3 or 4 right now, got rid of the popping... Just happy right now with the bike, bought to go on a quick ride :D
Sundance, I have put a little over a hundred on my reapers, no discoloration yet......get an occasional popping on decel.....I'm running richer than stock....sure is responsive on the take off throttle....I put ISO grips and the throttle boss and wanted to see where I wanted to set the throttle boss.....fired her up and was on my little lane at the house and barely put pressure on the boss, but actually gave it more throttle than anticipated and she almost flew out from under me.....Doug definitely has it programmed to take off!!

Do you remember what your settings are though, or are you on default?
RSS, it's on default right now....Doug said he had fine-tuned the some of the programmed settings in the current versions of the controller (vs. prior controllers), don't know exactly what that means though....I doubt if my bike is running lean...when I first started it up after installing the controller, some black smoke came out for a few seconds.....then went away..(no black smoke on acceleration either)...but the inside of my pipes are black and I even have some black soot on the outer rim of my pipe....if anything, I figure I'll have to lean it out a little...but for now, I'm leaving it alone.....I want to see how my mileage is with the new controller and pipes in......just before I installed it, I'd put some gas in the tank, but not full....just filled up Saturday, so I'll see when the light comes on.....before it was coming on in the 90's, but seems like I run faster than most.

Okay, cool... Yea, I have seen some black smoke come out of mine too... didn't notice it till that video that I made. Good thing to try though is to get some WD-40 and clean the area at the end of your pipes, to see how fast it blackens up, if anything... it will make it shiny again. But, so long as you're happy with it and it isn't throwing out black smoke anymore, then that is good... If it is, maybe we need to have Doug from Fuggin chime in on this thread, if he ever get's around to reading it that is.

**Doug, check out my vid... You'll notice the black smoke coming out the back, anyway to adjust the FC to get rid of that, since it seems to be a reoccurring theme? Let me know if you need a link.

RSS, thanks for the head's up on the WD-40 (gotta love that stuff!). I'll take your advice and clean it to see how quickly the black returns. Doug told me he had the controllers set to run rich with stock intake (which I still have on) but the same setting would be slightly lean with an aftermarket intake. That's something to consider. I believe you have an aftermarket intake, not sure if Sundance does though????
Hey Sundance,

Mine looks like it's beginning to turn....what did you find out about it and what did you do? Any other people on this list with fuggin pipes changing colors?

Thanks,
Bob

Yea, I wrote and called Doug to figure out the issues with the decel popping Woodenhorse (mode 4 on the newer controllers), maybe he can help you find tune it a little bit, either on the phone or via e-mail.
