I wanted to be able to mount my iPhone (GPS) and a cup holder for when I take long rides but I did not want the base mount to ruin the look of the bike when not in use. After much research this was the best I could do.

I purchased two RAM Mount Motorcycle Handlebar Clamp RAM-B-367U kits to install on the clutch and throttle brackets using the upper socket bolt on each. The kits comes with M8 bolts and the clutch and throttle brackets use M6 bolts. I used a grinder and removed the threads on the M8 bolts and then used a die to make M6 threads. All I had to do then was bolt it back together.

They do not stand out and if I paint them silver you wouldn't even know they are there.

That is really cool. I have had to resort to a water bottle in my baggy shorts and my blackberry in my pocket. Not real safe dialing in my blackberry while riding. Your solution is much better. I may now incorporate some of these ideas. Thanks for sharing.:)

DP, Won't they hit the tank when turning. I've though about this before and not sure I could turn sharp without the big scratch?

Sorry, but I look how close my bars are and thought it was impossible. I wasn't sure if you had risers to make more clearance or not.

Sometimes my mouth is in gear before my brain!!!

I have that Ram mount on mine also for my Garmin 550.
I used the U bolt with it, but I like the way you have the knob mounted.:)
The Garmin sync's with my phone and scala headset.
Furst time I received a call while riding they didn;t even know I was on the bike..lol mic in the full face helmet..

I don’t talk on the cell when I’m riding. I will pull over if it is an important call. The GPS in my Blackberry is what is essential to me. I prefer long rides in the country. Therefore I have gotten turned around more times than not and been lost. Gets a little scary when your way out there and a storm is brewing.

It's not like I set out and go hey, lets go for a ride and shoot the shit on the phone...
The GPS sync'd with the headset is for turn by turn audio and the phone is sync'd as well.

To let you know I am not a advocate of cell phones and driving. I hate the things and normally use about 60 minutes a month on my cell and is normally from my home.
It was a test call to see what is sounded like.
So before you went down that judgmental road, I guess I should have explained it better.

not sure if your phone will work this way but I can turn my "phone" function off and use mine as an mp3 player that can be wirelessly syncd. would the same thing be possible while using gps? I've never used gps on a phone so I don't know how they work... If so, you could have the gps syncd to your bluetooth but all incoming calls would go straight to voicemail

So... Back on topic

Nice job dp.

I think if everyone re reads the first post you will notice the (GPS) reference.
The use of GPS has become more and more popular and I now can't stand to be without it. The luxury of knowing where and how far gas stations are, where to eat, sleep etc. and the ability to get turn instructions to a headset have proven invaluble on my annual expeditions.

While I have yet to install this, I am hoping it will give me a range of mounting options for my Garmin Zumo 550 which serves as my map and my mp3 player. I can hardwire it or use bluetooth to my Panasonic ear buds.

Attached pic is a ram mount ball and a 1-1/4" formotion clamp. Kuryakyn also makes this clamp.

When the weather in Canada smartens up I may get to try it out.

Very nice, I used the U bolt as I stated above. I had to grind the mount down because of the handle bars being fatter than the U bolt.
I have yet to put the Kury clam shell cover on the clutch side and getting event tighter for that U bolt.
Might have to come up with an alternative like you and dpfolie did.
I ran a power wire down to the fuse box and tapped into the Aux fuse and it comes on when the bike is on. (Quick disconnect from radio shack)

How do you like the Scala rider? I always wondered how clear the speakers would be and if you would get wind interference.

The Scala rider headset is awesome, no wind interference at all. (Mic installed in full face helmets) Bluetooth range is rated at 800 feet, haven't tested it that far. (About 500 feet) Built in FM radio in the headset (Not the best reception), iPod connector and plays MP3's from the 550 clear.
