I need your honest opinions on something I am thinking of doing. I am going to be installing my Black Cobra swept pipes on in the next couple of days. I want to enhance them a bit. I want to spray the pipe itself with a high temp red paint in certain spots. Then on the shields themselves, I want to water jet cut lightening bolts in the areas I painted. After all is said and done you will see the cutouts with the pipes red. How many coats of red high temp paint should I do? If this is not a good idea then feel free to let me know and why. I will touch up the bare metal on the cut outs with black high temp paint on the edges. I plan on doing this in the next day or two. I am sure this will work out but would like to know from others if its a good idea.

I bought the 2000* rustoleum high temp from autozone, hasn't burned off yet. I used 2 coats on mine

sounds like an awsome idea, not a lightning bolt fan, but I like it!!!

Sounds like a pretty neat idea that I have never heard of anyone else doing, so that's original. I would think two or three coats of paint would be sufficient, although personally I would think that the lightning bolts in the black heat shields showing through to the chrome pipe would look better, but that's just me, my thinking that lightning is white is why I say I like that idea better, but it's your bike. Good luck and let us know how things turn out and take some pictures.

The lightening bolts were a simple idea while writing it. I may come up with something different. The guy who is doing it is excited to do it and he is one of my best friends and riding buddies. So now I will definitely do 3 coats of the red. I was thinking of leaving it chrome but I want to see how the pipes look first. I am picking them up tonight at UPS. I want to do a tribal thing but I dont want it to compromise the shields. Plus I have to take into account of the mounting spots for the clamps. I dont want to do something and then have to stop then start it up again. Im sure you understand what I am talking about. I will wait a bit to hear what the other guys think. I think it should look pretty damn cool with the cutouts in red. I will absolutely take pictures.

I'd leave the pipes as is for a few miles--see if they discolor at all.
You may like the chrome showing through--if not, paint them.

as for the design--what ever your main theme for the bike is going to be should determine the cutout.
Example: lightening bolts (my fave) mixed with another design or future paint job should work together.

I have the Kury widow pegs--love 'em. real nice on long rides. but, if i ever come up with a theme (love that lightening!!) which involves dark gray clouds against my black bike, for example--there are going to be some lightening bolts somewhere in that paint job. Those widow pegs are going to have to go bye bye.

that also suggests that whatever color you put behind those cutouts is going to have to match a future paint job or fancy seats with a colored thread, etc..
