I got the bike back from its 600 mi service. I noticed the pipes are starting to turn goldish color. Doesn't that indicate it's running hot <lean>? Is there a way to determine if the PC V is working? I am wondering if they did something during the service...

All exhaust systems will eventually change color. This is not
a defect in the chrome. Pipes with shields will mask or hide the discoloration.

Just having the 600 mile service they are suppose to check and adjust the valve clearance if needed.

The only way to tell if the PC-V is working or not, is to have the exhaust gases checked on a dyno utilizing an Exhaust Gas Analyzer.

Make sure there are no exhaust leaks at the junction of the exhaust
pipe and the cylinder head.

Make sure there are no intake leaks as these can cause the engine
to run lean and overheat, turning the pipes blue.

Avoid long periods of idling.

Since the PCV is nothing more than a fuel trimmer it can only alter your fuel injection pulse width. To observe what the PCV is doing you can check the pulse width of your fuel injectors. Most diagnostic techs have a pulse width option on their multimeters or if you know someone with an oscilloscope you can get a square wave graphic. Both are very accurate and eliminate other factors that may affect exhaust gasses. The readings show milliseconds of applied voltage for injector ON time. You would need to take readings with the PCV switched ON and OFF in it's programmed operating range. Best of all, it's a simple two wire connection.

How does "long periods of idling" impact the PC-V?
That was about the bluing of chrome pipes, long periods of idling can heat up pipes at the exhaust ports.

Sorry, not the PC-V
