There's a lot of talk about replacing the air intake and after you select the adapter, it seems like an almost endless selection of styles. Although I already made my decision (and bought the one I want) I'm thinking there may be a downside to my selection.

I selected an open air K&N style. But now I'm thinking with that style, I'm kinda limited to fair weather riding.. right? I mean, I can't ride in the rain with that can I? And If I rode my bike to work, parked it outside and it rained.. (which happens a lot) would I be stranded at work until it dried out? Would the bike suck the water through the filter if its wet?

In an effort to find the answer to these and other questions, I turned to the internet. Although I didn't find the answer to my question, I did find this site..

Additional Intake Accesories

Now they had some stuff on their that was pretty cool, but they sold tapered filter covers. Which got me thinking "I'm gonna need that..". but I'm not sure if that's true. Do I need one?

Also, lets say the answer is "yes", I do need that cover. If I'm riding with the cover on, does that drastically change the AFR and cause my bike to do bad things?

there are filter condoms that you can buy for them, they slip on and keep out water, but still allows air in. it will, however, decrease your power output because of the air restriction. but as for the spikes, i dunno how those work in the rain, because thats the one i want

I had an unfortunate experience of riding in a down pour the day after the spike intake was installed.

The bike did well, I was worried about hydrolocking the engine.

For peace of mind I would purchase an aquasock for the intake, also, when I finally stopped the bike, I placed a ziplock bag over the intake when it was parked to keep excess water from getting soaked up.

Good Luck!

Aquasock?

So I googled "aquasock" and "filter condoms" :D and can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Does this go by another name? Or when you say, "Aqua Sock" that's exactly what you mean.. I did find aqua socks being sold with some shoes.

i'm going to get the S&S < is it pretty much weatherproof like the stock intake?
Yeah... I have the S&S also, the only problem is that my knee makes contact with the cover :(
