I've experienced all 3 situations.

1) Shifting up to 5th did not engage and went into neutral - re-shifted and it engaged.
2) In 5th already and it slipped into neutral - again re-shifted and it engaged
3) In Neutral and unable to shift to first - rolled bike forward or backward and shifted.

I also had and 87 honda shadow that had similar experiences. So I believe this to be a design flaw.

I shift into gears based on the what the manual says but this might be at too low a speed and RPM's for 5th. So I will try waiting a few ticks more and let the RPM climb a bit. Firm shifting is always required.

I was planning on waiting to my 600 tune up before taking to dealership but given the amount of response perhaps I should just take it in now.

Thanks for this post, this has been very valuable info
Hate beating a dead horse... but again, if you are continuously having these issues, trying considering changing out the parts like I stated above (or below, determining on how you have this forum set up for you... )

it's hard to go from 5th to neutral, it's jumping between gears.
that could be serious i would have the dealer to check it
before the warranty run's out. that way it's there baby.
if the dealer don't want to help than call honda for support.

Again, if they need help understanding this issue, have them call my dealer (read post above for info), tell them James with the Silver Fury sent you or told you to call about the lever and linkage issue... They rode it themselves and kind of felt what I was talking about.

the 4th and 5th gears are smaller and the sync gear is larger, it will require a good solid punch. this is normal. quite a few mfgr's have this issue (incl. good old Harley)

I've had the same issue and spoke to the dealer. They looked to see if any service notices regarding and found none. Also, since its not a reproducible problem and occurs when it wants they said they wouldn't even know where to start. I spoke to Honda Service Support ( 866-784-1870 ) and they stated they were not aware of any issues. The advisor did take my info and recorded complaint. The more people that do this may lead Honda to look into it.....

Someone please clarify

What's the clutch lever assembly (the lever on the handlebar - or the shifter levers to the tranny?)
Some call it,"The lever and Linkage".
Some call it, "The lever assemblly for the cluch".
Can some one be more specific? I'm going to the dealer today.

Don't worry about it,had issues first 600 miles now not an issue, shifted into 5th and boom neutral ,just kiccked her back up and i'm in 5th.It will take care of it self,i didn't misshift or pull up soft it just slipped really a non issue.Just get me a fifth gear that doesn't act like 4th then i will be happy....

I have noticed the last two winters, that when I get the bike out to ride after sitting for months, it has a little trouble going into neutral. It gets real touchy. I think riding and putting some miles on it gets everything lubed back up and it runs fine thereafter.

Old issue still occurring

I just bought a new 2015 and I am experiencing the same issues. It has been several years since you guys posted on this; will the guys who experienced these issues please tell us if they resolved the issues and what the solution was? I took mine to the dealer with 250 miles on it, complained of these issues, and they just adjusted clutch cable tension and sent me away.

I obviously don't know exactly what you're experiencing, but when anything like this happens to me, I just consider it, rider error. I bought my bike brand new in 2009 and a few times when shifting into 5th, it either didn't go in, or was in and then popped out. Since then I've just made sure to kick up a little harder, but maybe it's just part of the break in because it hasn't happened to me in a long time.

As far as difficulty shifting from N to 1st, that's just the nature of the beast in my opinion and a little clutch feathering takes care of it.

Clutch feathering is the answer for sure here. I have had to feather the clutch on all my Honda bikes for this reason. It's like the transmission is stuck between gears... a little feathering of the clutch and it pops into position.

When I rode motocross, all my bikes did it. My CBR125 did it. My CBR600 did it. My CBR 1000 does it. My Fury does it.

It's just typical Honda.

As for cruising in 5th gear and it popping out?...... I have never had any bike pop out of gear while running at a few thousand RPM.

All my Hondas have done it as well. I learned a long time ago how to manipulate the transmission. ;)
