5th gear slips into neutral

I saw another mention in the forums of going from 4th to 5th and getting a neutral feeling. My problem is that my fury is brand new, and in the first 200 miles, twice I was in 5th gear and then the transmission slips and the engine revs and I lose power (as if I'm in neutral). I have to pull the clutch and reclick the pedal up to set it back in 5th gear.

So I'm a little concerned now. Is this a common Fury issue? What can cause a 5th gear disengage? Gear selector fork issue? Collar issue?

I have just over 200 miles and I'm bringing it to the dealer for the 600 mile service when I get there. I'll let them know of this issue and I'll keep my ears and eyes open so I can strictly document how it happens. But yesterday's ride I was definitely cruising in 5th on the highway and it slipped into neutral, engine screamed, and I had to reset it back into 5th and it ran fine the rest of the way.

Thanks guys.

likewise, mine did it the first 1k, but after that it seemed to chill out.. but i had a vtx 1300 c before the fury, and that bike did the same thing too! also have friends that have 1300 R, and the C models, all have that same problem.. talked to the head mech. at the honda shop where i live at, he said that it is something to do with the 1300 vtx line.. like its a manufactoring flaw or something.. said he's seen dozens of bikes coming back to the shop with that complaint. and every single time he couldn't find nothing wrong, and it has never caused any problems with the bikes. only the inconvienance of having it happen..

I'm disturbed by how many people it's happening to, but also disturbed by many of you who seem like it hasn't happened to. How can this only be happening to some people if it's a possible manufacturing defect?

I'd really like acknowledgement or a statement from American Honda Motor Co., Inc. - Motorcycle Division. Which one of your hardcores know how to get in touch with them or where there are resources for manufacturing flaws documented anywhere?

This is why I'm leary of bringing it to the dealer cause they'll keep the bike forever and find nothing and that's less riding for me. My Honda dealer kindof sucks - they kept my friend's F4i for 2 weeks and couldn't diagnose an issue - they scare me, I have no confidence in them. If this is a well known issue with no resolution to date, I'd rather not let them get the opportunity to skull fuck me (sorry moderators).

Wait, RedspawnSilver, where is this thread? Is the lever assembly definitely the answer? Has anyone done this and the problem gone now?

We want to know if taking it to the dealer is a waste of time. You riders know the worst thing possible is a crash, second worse is a waste of riding time at a stupid stealership (especially us folk in NJ who have a limited riding season).

:(

Just wait till you run into the brake clicking issue... that's going to drive you nuts... My service guy (gold rated) even has it happening on his VTX... he doesn't know either, we've replaced the whole brake caliper... same issue. We're guessing the brake does that when it get's to a certain level, so that is our next step in the diagnosis plan...

Well I don't believe <as far as I can remember, which is long lol> this has happened to me, but I did notice that sometimes I would have issues with down shifting and it not wanting to drop to the next gear, or if I have the bike in neutral and try to put it in first gear that it would have issues.

if riding at slower speeds and shifting into 5th sometimes rpm not high enough for sync rings to engage.try to shift at higher rpm and see if it helps.
I think you hit the nail on the head. No problems here but I can feel the spot between gears if I don't shift forcefully. Make sure you are at the sweet spot on rpm's before shifting to a higher gear.

Reply 5th gear slips into neutral

I had the same problem with my VTX 1800. Bike would slip into a lower gear occasionally. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a linkage lubrication problem. One time I couldn't down shift and it was stuck in fourth. I got it home and washed the linkage and lubed it with a can of pressurized white lithium grease. Shot it into the housing and the linkage. Looses it up. Works every time. Poor design by Honda. If you don't firmly shift, then it will pop out in a lower gear. Goes in easier if its Lubed. :D

My service guy lubed it up... didn't work, that is why I had to replace everything... BTW, all under warranty.

Wow! Outstanding help gentlemen! I just got back from a ride and it did it again. This was shifting from 4th to 5th (never went into 5th, went into neutral). I reclicked up and it went into 5th. 3rd time in 300 miles.

I have plenty of firepower for the dealer now. Thanks so much guys (but keep it coming if there's more). Special thanks to RedspawnSilver. I really appreciate it man!

I think its just plain a design flaw, we will have to live with it. I also thought its my fault being my first bike and all.

But over time i've talked to other owners of the fury, they all experience exactly the same sporadic miss shift issues. And they have driven many bikes.

Yes, think its inherent for Honda's. .. as I said earlier in the post, shift to first when slowing down and stopping, then back up to neutral while you wait... my service Guy who is a long time Honda rider advised me o this because I thought there was something wrong with the bike just like everybody else... works everytime.

Experienced same situations

I've experienced all 3 situations.

1) Shifting up to 5th did not engage and went into neutral - re-shifted and it engaged.
2) In 5th already and it slipped into neutral - again re-shifted and it engaged
3) In Neutral and unable to shift to first - rolled bike forward or backward and shifted.

I also had and 87 honda shadow that had similar experiences. So I believe this to be a design flaw.

I shift into gears based on the what the manual says but this might be at too low a speed and RPM's for 5th. So I will try waiting a few ticks more and let the RPM climb a bit. Firm shifting is always required.

I was planning on waiting to my 600 tune up before taking to dealership but given the amount of response perhaps I should just take it in now.

Thanks for this post, this has been very valuable info

Hate beating a dead horse... but again, if you are continuously having these issues, trying considering changing out the parts like I stated above (or below, determining on how you have this forum set up for you... )

Again, if they need help understanding this issue, have them call my dealer (read post above for info), tell them James with the Silver Fury sent you or told you to call about the lever and linkage issue... They rode it themselves and kind of felt what I was talking about.
